Nearby places to visit:

  • The nearest village is Greenodd, just five minutes by car, with a small general store and Post Office, bakery, coffee shop, butchers and pub.
  • The nearest town is Ulverston, a lovely market town to the south of Hill Top with lots of independent shops and cobbled streets. It also has the world’s shortest, widest and deepest canal; with a Victorian railway station, it opens up opportunities to take journeys further afield.
  • The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway is just three miles away where you can travel back in time and catch a steam train to Lakeside, visit Stott Park Bobbin Mill – a working mill built in the 1800s, or the Lakes Aquarium. You can also catch a Windemere Steamer ferry to Bowness or Ambleside. Note trains typically run between the end of March and end of October.
  • Lake Windermere is the largest natural lake in England. With walks, cruises and other activities, it’s one of the most popular natural attractions in the Lake District.  Windermere village has become merged with the lakeside town of Bowness, though the two have quite separate centres.
  • Coniston Water is just a 5-minute drive with public access with its glorious Coniston Water, one of the largest of the lakes. A Victorian steam ferry, ‘The Gondola’, runs to Lake Bank pier at the south tip of the lake and Coniston launch runs regular scheduled services. You can also hire boats and bikes from Coniston Boating Centre.
  • Hawkshead is a market town, with many buildings dating from the 17th Century with a wide range of inns, pubs, teashops and gift shops.

Outdoor activities:

  • Walking in the Lake District is the perfect way to relax and see the beautiful scenery. There are hundreds of routes – whether you’re looking for a gentle stroll or a challenging hike, there are walks for everyone to enjoy. There are plenty of estuary walks too – great for dogs and kids on the beach. And there are many National Trust properties and landscapes in the area. While we can advise of many routes, we advise walkers to ensure they have their own good maps of the routes they intend to walk.
  • There are a number of off-road and long-distance cycle routes close to the property, including Sustrans’ Morecambe Bay Cycle Way. So, whether you’re looking for a Lake District cycling holiday, or just fancy a quick ride locally, there’s miles of cycle routes to check out. There’s plenty of places locally to hire bikes too.
  • Grizedale Forest is just 20 minutes by car and is great for family walks, with sculptures hidden in the woods and a children’s adventure playground. Go Ape is also located here, though booking is necessary.
  • River Deep, Mountain High outdoor activities and adventure sports are great for families and groups in the Lake District – choose from canoeing, gorge walking, rock climbing, archery, biking and much more.

  • Fishing in the Lake District is popular with many of our visitors, with many of the rivers holding good stocks of brown trout, salmon and sea trout. Some of the larger lakes are also well regarded for their pike and coarse fishing.
  • For a bit of pampering, the local health spa club at Whitewater is just ten minutes away.
